How to Oil a Chainsaw

How to Oil a Chainsaw

New to chainsaw oil or maybe just refreshing your memory? Either way, follow our 5 easy steps to oiling your chainsaw, keeping it running at peak performance.

1. Choose the Right Oil

Before anything, make sure you’re using high quality bar and chain oil to reduce friction and prevent overheating. Rotatech offers premium options to suit every user:

Tip: Despite what others might recommend as a quick fix, we suggest that you never substitute with motor oil. It doesn’t stick as well and can clog your oiler. Whilst this can seem like an easy hack, it can cost you more in the long run. Stick with the real thing.

2. Locate the Oil Reservoir Cap

Turn off the chainsaw and allow it to cool to prevent injury. Find the oil reservoir, usually marked with an oil drop icon. This is where you’ll pour in the bar and chain oil.

  • On most chainsaws, this is separate from the fuel tank.

  • Wipe the cap area clean to avoid debris falling into the tank.

3. Fill the Oil Tank

Use a funnel or pour slowly to avoid spills. Fill the reservoir until it's nearly full but not overflowing.

  • Most saws consume about one tank of oil per tank of fuel. Check yours regularly.

  • Rotatech’s 1L size is perfect for topping up without waste.

Tip: If you are running a large scale or long term project, our 205L and 1000L IBCs help you save significant money over time, making a great investment and ensuring you won't run out.

4. Check Oil Flow to the Bar

Start the saw and let it idle. Hold it over a light surface (like cardboard) and gently rev it. You should see a fine line of oil spray. This confirms the oiling system is working.

  • If no oil is coming out, check the oil port for blockages. This is more likely to occur when using motor or other non-specialist oils.

  • Consider replacing a worn chain or guide bar to ensure even oil distribution:

Tip: Damaged, worn or weak chains and bars can cause damage to your chainsaw and effect it's efficiency significantly, preventing proper lubrication of the machine and breaking easily.

5. Clean and Maintain Regularly

Wipe off excess oil, sawdust, and grime after use. Keep the oiler hole, guide bar groove, and oil port clean for smooth operation and prevent costly repairs.

  • Use a Chainsaw File to sharpen your chain for reduced resistance and oil demand.
  • Always wear the appropriate safety gear such as goggles and Chainsaw Gloves for additional control and protection.
